Helio Castroneves: On and Off the Track
Helio Castroneves, who has impressively claimed victory at the Indy 500 four times, is now striving for a historic fifth win. While he’s known for his speed on the racetrack, he sometimes indulges in a bit too much speed on public roads as well.
In a recent chat on “Planet Tyrus,” the 51-year-old recalled an encounter with the police. “I was going triple digits when an officer pulled me over and said, ‘Look, you can’t do that. I can take you away.’ I thought, just give me the ticket,” he shared with a laugh.
Interestingly, he mentioned that he used to get stopped quite a bit in his younger days. But now, with a 16-year-old daughter, he feels the need to be more responsible. “Having a child changes things. So, knock on wood, I’m a good boy now,” he joked.
Castroneves also remarked on his car rental habits, noting his preference for low-mileage vehicles. Yet, he finds it tough to secure one. Still, he finds some comfort in driving a “beat-down car,” especially if it has a nice scent.
Although he’s accustomed to pushing race cars to their limits, he admits that he’s careful with his rental, saying, “I didn’t want to be stuck in the middle of the road.” The challenges of everyday driving seem to differ vastly from his high-speed racing experiences.
In addition to racing, Castroneves demonstrated his playful side, engaging in Brazilian-style trash talk during the show. When one of the co-hosts asked for tips, Castroneves playfully chimed in with a phrase about sugarcane that he humorously explained as an expression with an edgy twist.
As he prepares for the upcoming Indy 500, Castroneves is excited not just about the race but also about incorporating his unique style into the event. The race is set for Sunday at 12:45 PM ET, and many are eager to see if he can secure that elusive fifth title at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
