Incendiary Reaction to Mayo Shortage

It’s quite a story, really. A man’s frustration over a lack of mayonnaise at a Spanish cafe took a wild turn when he ended up setting the place on fire, causing significant damage. The mayonnaise brand, Hellmann’s, stepped in to assist after hearing about the incident.

This unusual event unfolded at Cafeteria Las Postas in Sevilla on August 21. A customer asked for “a few packets of mayonnaise for a sandwich,” but the staff informed him they were out. What happened next—well, it’s something you wouldn’t typically expect.

After a brief confrontation, the man returned with gasoline from a nearby station. He poured it on the counter and ignited it. It all happened rather quickly.

Surveillance footage reveals a chaotic scene, with customers and staff hastily fleeing as flames erupted and smoke filled the air.

“You can only imagine the blaze that ensued,” said Jose Antonio Caballero, the cafe owner, reflecting on how many people were around. “There were kids, families enjoying their afternoon. It was just astonishing,” he remarked.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the fire; however, the damages are reported to be around $11,700, according to the cafe.

This bizarre arson incident caught the attention of Hellmann’s Spain, who offered to cover the repair costs for the cafe.

In a recent Instagram post, the company expressed, “Cafeteria Las Postas: Sorry we weren’t there. From now on, we’ll make sure you have mayo for those sandwiches.”

The cafe responded with gratitude: “Thank you @hellmanns_spain! We appreciate your support!”

As for the man behind the fire, bystanders managed to restrain him until the police arrived. He was arrested and reportedly sustained several burns during the incident. A local court has since decided to hold him without bail.
