Darling Graham Nordone Appointed to Senate Seat of Late Brother

Darling Graham Nordone, sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, has been appointed to fill her brother’s Senate position, receiving support from President Donald Trump.

At a ceremony on Monday afternoon, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster expressed his honor in asking Darlene to continue her brother’s work. This significant decision came shortly after Lindsey Graham’s unexpected passing due to an aortic dissection.

McMaster, who is aligned with Trump, appointed Nordone just two days after Graham’s death. President Trump had encouraged her, calling her “an amazing sister,” in a post on Truth Social, suggesting that her appointment would honor Lindsey’s legacy.

Initially, other candidates like Lt. Gov. Pam Evett, former Rep. Trey Gowdy, and U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint were in the mix. Nordone’s role will last until January 3, while voters will choose the next senator for a full six-year term in November.

The heart condition that led to Lindsey Graham’s death is known to occur suddenly. Nordone’s candidacy is still in question for the upcoming elections, particularly with some prominent Republicans, such as Rep. Nancy Mace and Rep. Ralph Norman, already vying for nomination.

As Graham’s passing has tightened the Republican majority, every vote will be crucial. Nordone, who tends to stay out of the public eye, has worked with the South Carolina Commission for the Blind, focusing on improving lives for visually impaired residents. She’s also shared her personal connection to Lindsey, having been raised by him after losing their mother when she was just 11.

While she has no prior elected experience, Nordone becomes South Carolina’s first female senator.

In addition to Trump’s backing, Sen. Tim Scott also extended his support, emphasizing her connection to her brother and the values they share. McMaster had spoken with both Trump and Nordone before making the appointment, indicating a strong consensus on her fitting the role.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune noted that having Nordone serve would help to extend Lindsey’s legacy and could potentially garner wide support if this decision is fully endorsed.

The special primary election filings start on July 21, with the election scheduled for August 11. If necessary, a runoff election would take place on August 25, allowing limited time for candidates to campaign before the general election on November 3.
