In the wake of the 2024 presidential election, many Americans, especially celebrities, have vowed to renounce their citizenship and move elsewhere.
For Americans considering dual citizenship options or looking for a second passport, many countries offer a path to citizenship based on ancestry.
These countries often allow foreigners to claim citizenship through their parents, grandparents, or direct ancestors. Below is a list of nine countries that offer citizenship by descent, arranged alphabetically.

1. Ghana
Under the Ghana Citizenship Act 2002, individuals with Ghanaian parents can apply for citizenship. The country's Year of Return initiative encourages African Americans and Afro-Caribbean people to reconnect with their heritage.
Ghana also offers a “right of residence” program, which allows people of African descent to live in Ghana indefinitely without a visa if they can prove their parentage.
2.Germany
Germany grants citizenship by descent to individuals with German parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents. Special provisions exist for people whose ancestors lost their citizenship due to political, racial, or religious persecution under the Nazi regime.
Children born to a German father and a non-German mother before July 1, 1993 can claim citizenship if paternity has been established by the age of 23.

3. Hungary
Hungary allows individuals with Hungarian parents or grandparents to claim citizenship, regardless of the number of generations living abroad. Knowledge of Hungarian is not required.
Citizenship by naturalization is also possible for 10 years if you have been married to a Hungarian citizen for at least 5 years or have no children.
4. India
India does not recognize dual citizenship but offers Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) status. This designation includes benefits similar to non-resident Indians (NRIs), such as a lifetime multiple entry visa and economic and educational privileges.
To be eligible, applicants must have Indian parents or grandparents and cannot be from Pakistan or Bangladesh.

5. Ireland
In Ireland, individuals who have a parent born in Ireland before 1 January 2005 are automatically considered nationals.
People with Irish grandparents can apply for citizenship through the Alien Birth Registration process, which is administered in Dublin. This route is also open to great-grandchildren, but additional documentation is usually required.
6. Italy
Italy grants citizenship by blood if the applicant's Italian ancestors were not naturalized abroad before the birth of the direct child.
If a female ancestor is involved, the child must have been born on or after January 1, 1948. Naturalization is also available to people who are married to Italian citizens or who have lived in Italy for at least 10 years.

7. Poland
Poland grants citizenship by descent to people who can trace their lineage back to ancestors born in Poland or its former territories.
Applicants must prove that their ancestors lived in Poland after 1920 and hold citizenship. Original documents issued in Poland are required.
8. Portugal
Portugal extends citizenship to individuals who have at least one grandparent with Portuguese nationality.
Applicants must provide a birth certificate linking them to Portuguese ancestry, and applications are only processed in Portugal and require an in-person visit.

9. Spain
Spain grants citizenship to individuals with Spanish parents or grandparents. You can also apply to adopt a Spanish citizen under the age of 18.
To confirm citizenship, applicants must pass two exams. DELE A2, which assesses basic Spanish language proficiency, and CCSE, which assesses knowledge of Spanish culture and constitution.
