Here are the 5 most risky TikTok challenges.

Social Media Challenges Posing Health Risks to Young Users

TikTok has gained a reputation for its whimsical challenges, but some of these have alarming health implications. A recent investigation highlighted the blackout challenge as the most lethal, claiming over 100 lives to date.

This detailed study was conducted by a California-based personal injury firm, aiming to shed light on how social media negatively impacts youth.

According to data from a January 2025 survey, 39% of Instagram users and 32% of TikTok users fall within the 13 to 24 age group.

The report indicated that social media challenge videos often tempt young users to mimic popular stunts seen online, sharing their versions for likes and views. This trend is concerning, especially since teenagers have an underdeveloped prefrontal cortex, rendering them more vulnerable to peer influence.

Blackout Challenge

This dangerous challenge, prevalent among kids aged 10 to 14, involves restricting oxygen flow for a fleeting euphoric feeling. Omega Law labeled this activity “extremely hazardous,” leading to serious health issues like brain damage and even death.

One tragic case involved a 12-year-old boy named Sebastian, who lost his life in July while participating in a choking game.

Tide Pod Challenge

The Tide Pod Challenge became notorious among teenagers and pre-teens, with participants biting into laundry detergent capsules for social media notoriety. This trend has resulted in severe health effects, including chemical burns and poisoning, with the latter causing more than 71% of cases. Research data from 2016 to 2020 recorded around 35,000 emergency room visits related to this challenge among minors, prompting New York State to propose legislation against candy-like liquid detergent packaging.

Milk Crate Challenge

The milk crate challenge, a social media fad that surged in 2021, involves navigating a pyramid of milk crates. While it seems simple, it has led to numerous injuries, including concussions and fractures, mostly among young people aged 15 to 18.

Fire Challenge

This risky challenge, favored by younger teens, involves applying rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer to one’s skin and igniting it before extinguishing the flames. Unfortunately, this has resulted in devastating injuries, including extensive burns. Notably, one Arizona teen suffered burns covering half his body while attempting a fireball stunt in 2023.

Benadryl Challenge

This dangerous stunt includes taking 12 to 14 Benadryl tablets—about six times the safe dosage—to induce hallucinations. The impact can be severe, ranging from seizures to, in some cases, fatalities. In 2023, a 13-year-old from Ohio died after participating in this challenge, prompting a statement from TikTok expressing condolences and reaffirming their commitment to community safety by removing harmful content.

While TikTok claims they’ve been monitoring and blocking such content for years, the persistence of these dangerous trends raises significant concerns about the influence of social media on youthful experimentation.
