Hero NYPD officer Joseph Michael Herbert, who captured the infamous 'New York Zodiac' killer, has passed away at 68.

The renowned New York Police Department officer, Joseph Michael Herbert, known for his role in capturing the infamous Zodiac Killer, has passed away at his home in Rockaway Beach on September 30. He was 68 years old.

Retired murder detective Louis Sabarese spoke highly of Herbert, stating, “He was the best boss I’ve ever had and the sharpest detective I met. His passion for the job was unparalleled. Beyond the NYPD, he cherished his wife Barbara and daughter Kristen.”

Herbert, a Brooklyn native, began his career with the NYPD in 1981 at just 23 years old. He quickly advanced and became a detective within five years, earning a medal of courage in 1985.

One significant event in his career was the 1996 arrest of Helibert Seda, who was responsible for the deaths of three individuals and injuries to several others in Brooklyn and Queens. Seda, currently serving a 235-year sentence at Upstate Clinton Correctional Facility, gained notoriety for his killings, which were linked to Zodiac signs.

This arrest was just one of many accomplishments throughout Herbert’s tenure in law enforcement.

Affectionately referred to as “pork chops,” he was later assigned to the Joint Terrorism Task Force after the September 11 attacks. Herbert retired in 2017, holding the ranks of Deputy Chief and Commander.

According to former NYPD detective chief Robert Boyce, “Joe’s understanding of criminal conditions was unmatched in our department. His insights were often seen as gospel during Compstat meetings.” He added that Herbert was a humble man who worked well with his colleagues.

An avid fan of the New York Rangers, Herbert embraced his retirement in Rockaway Beach, enjoying time with his granddaughter and writing his autobiography, as his family shared.

His obituary describes him as calm, witty, loyal, and someone who lived with love and integrity.

Visitation for Herbert will be held on Monday from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at Dennis S. O’Connor Funeral Home in Far Rockaway, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Francis de Sales Church on Staten Island. His family requests that any contributions be made to the First Responder Children’s Foundation.
