House Republican leaders are closely monitoring several Republican lawmakers ahead of a vote scheduled for next week on whether to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
With a slim majority and all Democrats likely to oppose the bill, Republicans will need to stay mostly in lockstep to pass it in what would be a historic vote. A cabinet minister has not been impeached since 1876.
Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.) told reporters Thursday morning that he was “adamantly” opposed to impeaching Mayorkas.
Although he criticized Biden officials for their handling of the southern border crisis, he said, “People I talk to on the outside, constitutional experts, former party members, agree that this is not an impeachable offense.” Stated.

At least four other Republicans have yet to take a stance, at least publicly.
The office of Rep. David Joyce (R-Ohio), leader of the moderate Republican governing group, told Fox News Digital on Friday that he “has met with Speaker Greene and is reviewing the materials provided.” he said.
House Financial Services Committee Chairman Patrick McHenry (R) did not tell reporters how he would vote. Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-Wash.) and Rep. Tom McClintock (R-Calif.) also declined to say which way they were leaning earlier this week.
Fox News Digital reached out to McHenry, Newhouse and McClintock’s offices for an update, but did not immediately receive a response.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) has been dealing with one of the thinnest House majorities in history in recent weeks. Mr Johnson is walking a tightrope with just a two-seat majority due to Republican absenteeism and the departure of three former MPs.
But there was some recent respite, with longtime Democratic congressman Brian Higgins of New York resigning on Friday.
Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.), who was undergoing treatment related to a cancer diagnosis, and Rep. Hal Rogers (R-Ky.), who is recovering from a car accident, are also expected to return to the House soon.
If Mayorkas’ impeachment fails in the House, it would be a major blow to House Republicans who are focused on the border crisis.

The effort has support from a majority of House Republicans. Representative Don Bacon (R-Nebraska), a key moderate, had been wary of impeaching the Cabinet secretary, but told reporters earlier this week that he supported impeachment as well.
“That’s what we’re going to do,” Bacon said when asked about this on Tuesday. “Because there’s a disaster happening at the border. And I think there are a lot of laws that he could have enacted or enforced, but he hasn’t.”
