Cameras, some as small as the tip of a pen, can be hidden virtually anywhere criminals use them for sexual gratification or financial extortion, including motels, vacation rentals, and even cruise ships.

One in four travelers will discover an illegally hidden camera inside their vacation rental in 2023, according to a recent survey by property Investment company IPX1031says, “Rental properties have many benefits, but privacy and security continue to be a focus, especially when it comes to cameras.”

Cybersecurity expert Michael Balboni says spring break travelers – typically college students on a budget – seek out cheap Airbnbs and motels, but those guests are using illegally hidden cameras. It is said that there is a high possibility that they may spy on guests without their knowledge.

“When it comes to spring break…motels for students (in popular spots like South Beach, Miami Beach, Florida) because they don’t cost a lot of money, they put up some of these cameras so people can see what they’re doing. “They may be caught doing it for harm, or for more insidious reasons,” a former homeland security adviser for New York state told FOX News Digital.

Fletcher, a former Manhattan prosecutor, said in the post: “It can be hidden in plain sight in a dark corner, a closet, or as a cell phone that you can place on a table and secretly record.”

The easy availability and relatively low cost of this technology has increased Americans’ fears that they are being watched by hidden cameras.

According to a survey by ipx1031, approximately 58% of Americans are concerned about hidden cameras, and 34% say they have searched their vacation property.

how to find hidden cameras

Balboni said there are ways to be sure of finding even the most cleverly hidden cameras and microphones, which are likely to be located in a variety of locations.

“The camera is placed high in the corner of the room so that it can see the entire room,” Balboni said. “So that’s one thing he should look at from a look and position standpoint. The microphone would be in the middle of the room.”

The easiest first step is to turn off the lights and look around the room to see if light is coming from “unexpected places,” Balboni said.

“That’s the first thing. Then I turn off the lights and walk around the room with a flashlight and shine the flashlight on a section of the wall or a section of the grading, such as an air conditioning unit, to see if there’s a lens there. “Check it out,” and you’ll see a glow. ”

Also, note any items you left out of the room, such as vases, teddy bears, and other loose items. That’s because there could be cameras inside these items, he said.

Other clues to look out for include buzzing sounds from your cell phone. He said some digital cameras can interfere with cell phones and cause buzzing sounds when in use.

Two-way mirrors, like those seen on police TV shows, are also potential spy tools. Balboni says if the mirror is thin and you can see behind it, it’s likely not a double-sided mirror.

But if it’s heavy and chunky, suspicion should arise. “If you knock and see that it’s very crowded, it’s probably a two-way mirror,” Balboni says.

Another tip mentioned by Balboni is what to do if you find a hidden camera.

“Call the police immediately,” he said. “Don’t go after the landlord. Don’t go after the Airbnb user. Call the police and tell them it’s a crime and you picked it up.

Basic elements of illegal surveillance

The Law Offices of Lance Fletcher outlined four common motivations for hidden cameras:

  1. “Any act committed without knowledge or consent for the purpose of entertainment, recreation, or profit, to degrade or abuse, or for sexual arousal or gratification.”
  2. “It was done by you or your representative.”
  3. “It was done to covertly view prohibited things, such as dressing and undressing, sexual or intimate parts, underwear (such as panty shots), and sexual acts.”
  4. “It was done to look inside protected areas such as bedrooms, changing rooms, fitting rooms, bathrooms, and hotel rooms.”

“As security cameras have become more common, we have become desensitized to them,” the law firm said in a blog post. “Thirty years ago, it might have seemed strange to see a surveillance camera recording in someone’s home, but now that it’s happening so often, it doesn’t bother me as much.”

“This change in technology has made it easier and easier to secretly record people.”
