The once-thriving tech industry is now facing a harsh reality, with massive layoffs across the industry and tens of thousands of workers struggling to find new jobs.
CNBC report The technology industry is facing its deepest job losses since the dot-com bust in 2001, with more than 50,000 jobs cut at more than 200 companies in 2024 alone, according to data from Layoffs.fyi. This follows 260,000 layoffs in 2023 that affected nearly 1,200 technology companies. The current situation stands in stark contrast to the booming market for AI engineers, where salaries rose 12% in the final quarter of 2023, with the national average income for senior AI engineers at more than $190,000.
Industry majors such as Google, Amazon, Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta, and Microsoft are all participating in the retrenchment, along with companies such as eBay, Unity Software, SAP, and Cisco. While Wall Street has largely praised these cost-cutting measures, the reality for those affected is far from positive. Many highly skilled workers are now settling for lower-paying jobs or leaving the technology industry altogether.

Alison Croisant, a data scientist with 10 years of experience in the technology field, was among those fired by PayPal earlier this year. She described her job search process as “insane” and noted that “everyone else has been laid off too.” Croissant said that during her five-week job search, she applied for 48 jobs, but was only successful in interviews for two. She eventually took a lower-level data analyst role, cutting her base salary by about $3,000.
Croissant echoed Kristen Powers, who was fired from travel technology startup Flyer in January after two years in marketing. Powers said navigating the current labor market is like a full-time job, “and in some cases it’s even more difficult.” Furthermore, she added: It does a lot of damage to your self-confidence and you end up with this kind of impostor syndrome. ”
Even former employees of Google, once considered the home of Silicon Valley’s elite talent, are not immune to these challenges. Support for laid-off Google employees Christopher Fong, founder of his group Xoogler.co, says the “biggest challenge” for many former Google employees is being able to maintain their previous salary levels. I said it was about finding a job.
Today’s technology worker job market is much different than it was just a few years ago, when software developers and data scientists were among the most sought-after professionals. Amit Mittal, a software engineering manager who was laid off from AI financing company Upstart, noted that the hiring process has become “much more rigorous” and candidates are now competing with significantly more experienced candidates for the same position. .
For some people, like Bill Vezey, a software engineer who was laid off from eBay after 13 years, job hunting has become a “new game” with different rules. Vezey emphasized the importance of personal branding and networking to access the “hidden job market.” Despite the challenges, Mr. Vesey is optimistic about his future and hopes to be rehired by his long-time employer.
