Officer Delivers Baby on Highway

A typical day turned memorable for Officer Tyler Shelby of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) when he assisted in delivering a baby boy on the side of a highway.

On November 22nd, while on patrol in southwestern Oklahoma, Shelby rushed to assist with traffic control for an ambulance responding to a woman in labor, just about a mile away.

In dashcam footage, he can be seen parking behind a black Chevrolet Camaro with the passenger door open, revealing a pregnant woman inside.

Initially, Shelby intended to comfort her, but things escalated quickly. “The baby is coming!” the mother informed him. His immediate response—“Well, don’t push it!”—is quite relatable, given the panic of the situation.

In no time at all, both Shelby and other officers aided in delivering the first child, a boy ultimately named Finley. Shelby humorously remarked, “All I did was play catch.”

Dashcam video captured an ambulance arriving shortly afterward, taking both the mother and baby to the hospital for further care. After the unexpected delivery, Shelby returned to his patrol duties, ready for whatever came next. “I’m happy to report that both mother and baby are doing well!” said OHP.

OHP also noted that their personnel undergo training for unexpected emergencies, such as this one. “Our medical training covers childbirth basics. While we hope to avoid such situations, our service members are prepared when they arise,” they added. Offering congratulations, OHP expressed happiness for the family, grateful for Shelby’s timely assistance.
