Hiker Discovers Body of Missing Scientist in National Forest, Authorities Report

Missing Scientist Found Dead in New Mexico

Authorities have confirmed that a hiker discovered the body of a woman on May 28 in New Mexico’s Carson National Forest. The remains were found in the McGaffey Ridge area, along with a handgun, prompting the New Mexico State Police (NMSP) to launch an investigation. The deceased has been identified as Melissa Casias.

Casias worked as an administrative assistant at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, her niece Jazmin McMillen told CBS News. She had been reported missing on June 26, 2025. According to police, Casias didn’t show up for work and failed to return home after visiting her daughter at her job. Items like her cell phones, purse, and identification were left behind, leading her family to file a missing persons report.

Interestingly, this case isn’t isolated. Over the past 33 months, at least ten scientists or staff linked to U.S. nuclear or space technology have either died or gone missing. Among them are Steven Garcia, a government contractor with alleged top-level clearance at a nuclear facility, who went missing in August 2025, and retired Air Force Maj. Gen. William Neil McCasland, believed to have vanished on February 27 after leaving his New Mexico home. Anthony Chavez, another employee at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, is also reported missing, as per reports.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the House Oversight Committee are now investigating the circumstances surrounding these scientists’ deaths and disappearances.

Casias’ family confirmed her passing through a statement shared with KRQE. “We confirm that the remains found in Rio Chiquito are Melissa. There will be more information to come, but what we can tell you now is that she was located in an area that had been previously searched. This is a lot to process; our hearts are heavy, and we intend to continue seeking answers for justice,” they stated.

As of now, the cause and manner of Casias’ death remain undetermined, with the NMSP noting that the Office of the Medical Investigator will perform an anthropological examination. The investigation into her death is described as “active and ongoing.”
