Hiker in Texas saved from hypothermia on Mount Washington during heatwave

Texas Hiker Rescued in New Hampshire’s White Mountains

In stark contrast to the sweltering heat experienced across much of the East Coast, a 55-year-old hiker from Texas faced dire conditions during her rescue from White Mountain in New Hampshire on Friday evening.

Caroline Wilson, who hails from Austin, was discovered unresponsive due to hypothermia on the Gulfside Trail, roughly a mile north of the Cog Railroad tracks. Her husband had alerted authorities around 5 PM.

Rachel Stocker, a rescue officer, noted that Wilson was wearing a cotton base layer—something not ideal for hiking due to its moisture-absorbing properties. Stocker mentioned that the weather on Friday was intermittently rainy, which likely contributed to Wilson’s situation.

“White Mountain can be quite merciless,” Stocker said, reflecting on the rapidly changing weather conditions. Photos from the rescue showcased a foggy landscape and steep rocky paths.

The Fish and Game Division in New Hampshire coordinated a robust response, involving volunteers from various search and rescue teams. The team faced challenges like strong winds and poor visibility during their effort to reach Wilson, as well as other hikers suffering from hypothermia that day.

Even though a heatwave swept through cities from Boston to Baltimore, temperatures at Mount Washington barely hit 20°F, with winds gusting up to 120 mph and dense clouds obscuring visibility.

Rescue operations relied on the COG Railroad to transport rescuers to challenging locations. The first rescue team made it to the ridgeline by 7 PM, followed by a second team an hour later. They set up a temporary shelter for Wilson, aiding her before braving the harsh weather conditions to carry her back to the waiting train.

Upon reaching the base, Wilson was handed over to the Twin Mountain Ambulance crew and transported to Littleton Area Healthcare for further treatment.

Authorities praised the rescue teams for their relentless efforts, emphasizing the serious nature of the weather that could have been life-threatening.
