Hiker Rescues Himself on Mount Washington

A 61-year-old hiker managed to pop his dislocated shoulder back in place during a journey on New Hampshire’s Mount Washington, and remarkably, he continued his ascent.

Kurt Siuzdak, a resident of Connecticut, was hiking earlier this week when he slipped on a wet granite surface and painfully sustained the injury. The incident was highlighted by The Boston Globe, which referenced a statement from the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.

Siuzdak commenced his hike around 4 a.m. on Tuesday. Six hours later, at approximately 10 a.m., he lost his footing on a slick granite slab in the area known as the Lakes of the Clouds.

During his fall, he dislocated his shoulder and sustained a back injury. Still, faced with the challenging conditions, Siuzdak resolved to continue, albeit at a slow and steady pace, as he was about a mile and a half from the summit of Mount Washington.

Approximately five hours after his injury, another hiker discovered Siuzdak. He shared with the rescuers his intention to push forward and assess his options upon reaching the summit.

By the time two officers met him around 5 p.m., Siuzdak was still making his way up the mountain, albeit slowly. Accompanied by the officers, he persevered and ultimately reached the summit, using his own strength.

After receiving evaluation from emergency personnel, Siuzdak requested to be taken to his vehicle so he could drive himself to obtain further medical care, according to the Globe.

Remarkably, Siuzdak managed to reset his dislocated shoulder during the trek. The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department commended him for being well-prepared, noting that he had adhered to their recommendations by bringing extra gear, including warm clothing and a first aid kit. These supplies proved vital after his accident, and he expressed gratitude for having followed their advice.
