Climbers Rescued from England’s Highest Mountain
Two climbers, lost in “dangerous winter conditions,” were rescued after spending seven hours in a difficult situation while attempting to scale England’s highest peak. The rescue took place on Scafell Pike, which stands at 3,200 feet elevation, and was managed by a non-profit organization dedicated to mountain rescue operations.
In a Facebook post, the Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team expressed confusion about the behavior of the climbers after their ordeal. They noted that the manager of Wasdale Head Inn had graciously stayed awake to provide food and a room for the men post-rescue. However, despite being offered a 35% discount, the climbers reportedly left without settling their $178 bill, claiming they lacked the funds to pay.
“Unfortunately, the next morning, they appeared ungrateful for the hospitality offered, even asking for further discounts and breakfast,” the rescue team said. “When it came to transportation out of the valley, we had to inform them that there would be no additional charges.”
The rescue organization further indicated that the climbers had failed to return two flashlights that belong to them and that the contact information provided to the hotel manager turned out to be invalid. As of now, the men have still not paid their bill. Interestingly, this incident elicited a strong reaction from the public; many Good Samaritans donated more than enough to cover the unpaid amount, helping to support the organization’s annual operating costs, which exceed £100,000.
The rescue team attempted to communicate with the climbers regarding the outstanding bill, the flashlights, and some crutches mistakenly left in the team’s vehicle but received no response. They expressed hope that the post would encourage the men to address their debts, even providing a QR code for easier payment. The team concluded by highlighting that their volunteers are unpaid yet always welcome donations due to the substantial costs associated with their operations.
In a related comment, the hotel thanked the rescue team for their professional handling of the incident and for their care in accommodating the climbers during the night. Remarkably, they noted that, in over 45 years, they hadn’t encountered such a situation where rescued individuals acted in such a manner, but the support from the community greatly outweighed this unfortunate episode.
