Tragic Derailment of Lisbon’s Glória Funicular
On Wednesday, a significant incident occurred in Lisbon’s Glória Funicular during rush hour, leading to the unfortunate loss of at least 15 lives and injuring 18 others, including a child.
The historic tram, which has been a cherished mode of transport for both locals and tourists since its inception in 1885, derailed and collided with a building nearby. Early investigations suggest that loose cables might be to blame for this tragic event, which took place while the tram was heavily occupied.
Emergency services responded quickly, providing immediate care for the injured and transferring several individuals to a local hospital for further treatment.
Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed deep sorrow for the families affected, emphasizing the government’s commitment to a transparent investigation, saying, “This is a tragedy we have never seen before.”
Authorities have started looking into possible mechanical failures, with local media pointing to concerns surrounding recent maintenance practices. The Glória Funicular has long been a vital link between downtown Lisbon and the Bairro Alto district, attracting thousands of visitors annually.
In response to the tragedy, the Portuguese government has declared a day of mourning, reflecting on the “irreparable loss of human lives” and the sorrow it brings to families and the nation as a whole.
