‘Hitler and the Nazis: Evil on Trial’ is ‘cautionary tale’ as America faces critical stage, filmmaker says

Filmmaker Joe Berlinger is appalled at how many people lack a basic understanding of the facts surrounding World War II, and in his film “Hitler and the Nazis: Evil on Trial,” We hope to provide a “cautionary tale.”

The six-part Netflix series attempts to “forget” World War II by examining the rise of the Third Reich, its collapse, and the devastation caused by Adolf Hitler along the way, told through the lens of the Nuremberg trials. The aim is to educate viewers about the history of the past.

“In America, with authoritarianism knocking on the door and anti-Semitism on the rise, we are in the midst of a cleansing of our democracy and ourselves. Belief in our democratic institutions, faith in our government, “Belief in democracy is at a critical stage across all ideologies,” Berlinger said. series promotion.

“We have divided into camps and demonized each other,” he continued. “But unless people learn to talk to each other and have basic respect for each other, the very foundations of democracy will crumble.”

Each episode explores a different element of the Nazi regime, from the rise of Hitler to the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg, which was held accountable for unprecedented evil.

“It’s shocking how little people know or forget about this history. One in 10 Millennial respondents thought the Holocaust was caused by Jews. 50 % could not even name one of the 40,000 concentration camps: Auschwitz,” Berlinger said. “So now is the perfect time to retell this story to young people and as a warning on a global scale.”

The series comes as America grapples with what Berlinger calls “dehumanization and anti-Semitism that is extreme by modern standards.”

“Dissecting what happened in Nazi Germany allows viewers to see just how precious democracy is, how easily it can be attacked from within, and how important it is to protect it.” I hope you understand,” Berlinger said, adding that he decided to focus on that. The Eastern Front of World War II, primarily involving the Soviet Union versus Nazi Germany, was depicted to fill a void for American viewers.

“The Western Front is a war that most Americans know and understand, but for Hitler it was not a major event,” Berlinger said.

An acclaimed producer and director, Berlinger has produced numerous hit true crime films starring notorious con artist Bernie Madoff and serial killers John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy, and Jeffrey Dahmer. I did. He said he got into filmmaking after being “horrified” as a teenager by images of Holocaust liberation featured in the series.

Joe Berlinger's feelings

Mr. Berlinger said the eyewitness testimony of the late William L. Shirer, an American journalist trusted for critical reporting of the time, in this series makes “Hitler and the Nazis: Evil on Trial” a second book. I feel that this sets it apart from other world war documentaries.

“Shirer had a front row seat to Hitler’s rise to power, and by infusing his first-hand experiences into numerous works of literature, we now have a personal lens through which to view this historical moment. Not only did I put it in, I felt it more than ever.”It was important to bring his words to life,” Berlinger said.

Thanks to modern technology, Shirer, who died in 1993, is now able to serve as narrator, and his voice is heard throughout the series.

“Although many of his reports were censored in Germany, he had the courage to smuggle out his diary at great personal risk – and later published numerous books, including The Berlin Diary. Berlinger began publishing and informing the world through his most famous books, “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.”

“With AI technology in a certain place today, we thought we could actually bring those sentences to life in his own voice,” he continued. “I got permission from my family, and they were really excited about the idea. I think it really brought a lot to the storytelling.”

“Hitler and the Nazis: Evil on Trial” will be released on Netflix on June 5th.
