Governor Hochul Takes Action on SNAP Benefits Amid Shutdown

New York’s Governor Cathy Hochul has instructed state agencies to start distributing SNAP benefits utilizing state resources, given that food stamp payments were halted for the first time during the longest federal government shutdown on record.

The initial payment may be processed as early as Sunday, just over a week after the food payments ceased.

About 2.9 million residents in New York depend on SNAP, and Hochul emphasized this action was crucial due to the “chaos and confusion” stemming from the federal shutdown.

“Let me be clear: President Trump is determined to keep food available for millions of Americans,” Hochul stated on Friday. “He is exacerbating this situation with decisions that deny funds needed to support families, children, and the elderly, despite clear court rulings.”

Last week, the Department of Agriculture, which oversees SNAP, informed states that it plans to fully distribute SNAP benefits in November, despite funding challenges linked to the government shutdown.

However, the Trump administration has contested a recent court ruling mandating the full funding of SNAP by last Friday, claiming that doing so would compel the USDA to allocate funds to other non-emergency programs.

On Friday, the Supreme Court temporarily paused the lower court’s directive.

The typical SNAP-using household receives around $332 monthly, while households with children average about $575.

While the Trump administration seeks a temporary solution for SNAP funding, Republicans argue that reinstating full payments is straightforward. Meanwhile, Democrats assert that they will not support a stopgap unless Republicans agree to increase funding for healthcare and Medicaid.
