Governor Hochul Endorses Zoran Mamdani for NYC Mayor
On Sunday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul officially endorsed Zoran Mamdani, a candidate for the upcoming general election in New York City.
This announcement was made during an interview with The New York Times, where Hochul highlighted the importance of collaboration with the city’s mayor.
“Choosing the next mayor is a significant responsibility, and I’ve put considerable thought into it,” the moderate Democrat expressed in her statement. “Tonight, I’m throwing my support behind Congressman Zohran Mamdani.”
Mamdani, who identifies as a democratic socialist, secured the Democratic nomination earlier this summer. However, he faced hesitation from some party leaders, who were concerned that his progressive views might be too extreme for certain voters.
Recent polls suggest that Mamdani is currently leading over his competitors, showing favorable results even in head-to-head matchups.
Hochul explained that her endorsement followed several in-depth discussions with Mamdani in the past few months.
“We didn’t agree on everything, but through our dialogue, we shared a mutual commitment to making New York a safe and opportunity-rich place for families,” she shared.
She expressed that there have been concerns from the New York City Police Department regarding the need for adequate resources to ensure safety in streets and subways.
“I encouraged him to confirm that the NYPD has strong leadership, and he agreed on that point,” Hochul noted.
During their conversations, Hochul stressed the rising issue of anti-Semitism and the urgent need to combat it.
“It was encouraging to see him engage with the city’s Jewish leaders and directly address their concerns. I’m committed to ensuring all New Yorkers, regardless of faith, feel safe and welcome,” she wrote.
Additionally, she underscored the necessity of attracting businesses to maintain New York’s status as a global economic leader.
Hochul reiterated the importance of making life in the city more affordable and remarked, “It’s crucial that the next mayor stands firm against any encroachment from Donald Trump.”
“While I may not have agreed with him on every issue, I believe New York City possesses the resilience, urgency, and optimism to navigate through current challenges,” she stated.
Hochul candidly acknowledged the complexities of her alliance with Mamdani, emphasizing that leaders should be focused on action rather than complaints.
“Zoran and I might not see eye-to-eye on everything. I reserve the right to always voice my thoughts passionately,” she remarked.
“For all these reasons, I’m endorsing Zoran Mamdani in the mayoral race, and I look forward to collaborating to ensure New York City’s brightest days are ahead.”
Mamdani expressed his gratitude for Hochul’s support.
“We appreciate the Governor’s backing in bringing our party together, her commitment to opposing Trump, and her focus on making New York more affordable. We anticipate the great work we’ll accomplish as a team,” he shared on social media. “We’re just getting started.”
