Governor Hochul Responds to Republican Claims
New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her disagreement with the Republicans on Thursday, addressing their assertions regarding the FBI’s involvement in tracking Texas Democrats who exited the state in the midst of a district controversy.
“To start with, I hold the FBI in high regard, but honestly, there are far more critical matters they should be focused on, like human trafficking, dismantling drug cartels, and preventing terrorist acts in New York City,” she stated.
She went on to call the situation an “abuse of power.” “If we reach that point, it becomes even more vital for us to fight back. People will rally and say, ‘We can’t let you take away our democracy, and we won’t let you corner any elected officials,'” Hochul added.
On the same day, Republican Senator John Cornyn from Texas announced that FBI Director Kash Patel had approved his request for assistance in detaining the Democrats who left Texas to evade voting on a new Congressional map that could disadvantage the opposition, effective mid-2026.
The Texas Senate Constituency Committee moved forward with the proposed map on Thursday, potentially allowing the Republicans to secure at least five additional seats in the upcoming election.
Hochul cautioned on Thursday night that if the Republicans do not back down from their district initiatives, Democrats would respond “with fire.”
“I never intended to make this a fight. I’ve always adhered to the rules,” she remarked. “Democrats consistently follow the rules, but when these actions threaten to undermine democracy, it would be shameful for us not to take a stand.”
She concluded, “They can decide to stop this game at any moment. But until then, we won’t stay on the sidelines.”
Hochul’s remarks coincided with ongoing investigations by Democratic lawmakers regarding the FBI’s potential involvement. Representative Jamie Raskin from Maryland, a key member of the House Judiciary Committee, emphasized that the agency should avoid stepping into political matters.
