Former NHL Player Guido Tenesi Passes Away at 71
The sports community is mourning the death of Guido Tenesi, a former NHL player, who has passed away at the age of 71.
Tenesi gained fame for his role as Billy Charle Boyce in the beloved 1977 sports comedy film, “Slap Shot.” It’s certainly a sad moment for those who remember him not only for his film portrayal but also for his contributions on the ice. His presence during the 1974 Calder Cup Championship is noted as a significant part of his career.
The cause of Tenesi’s death has not been disclosed. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the fifth round of the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft and played in various professional leagues, including a two-year stint with the Penguins’ minor league teams in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
Tenesi had celebrated victories, including winning the North American Hockey League title with the Johnstown Jets in the 1974-75 season. Reflecting on his journey, he acknowledged how his time with the Jets played a role in landing his film role. “I played alongside guys like Ned Dowd and Dave Hanson. Ned was always recording what happened during our trips—like if someone stumbled or lost a stick,” he once shared.
“Slap Shot” humorously chronicles the misadventures of a minor league hockey team, the Charles Town Chiefs, with Paul Newman portraying the team’s coach, Reggie Dunlop.
Steve Carlson, another actor from the film, fondly remembered Tenesi, stating he was “a good guy who left us too soon.” In his tribute, he expressed gratitude for their shared experiences and extended his condolences to Tenesi’s family and friends.
Through the ups and downs, it’s clear that Tenesi made an impact—both on the rink and in the hearts of those who knew him. His friends and colleagues now hold onto those memories. “Rest easy, #5—you’re the Chief forever,” Carlson added.
