Hockey legends Ken Morrow and Pat LaFontaine thrilled for Team USA's gold medal

U.S. Men’s Hockey Team Triumphs at 2026 Olympics

The U.S. men’s hockey team has made history, capturing the gold medal for the first time since the iconic 1980 Miracle on Ice. Ken Morrow, a key player from that legendary team, emphasized that this victory is the culmination of decades of dedication and development.

“Since 1980, U.S. hockey has been on a journey toward this achievement,” Morrow shared, expressing confidence that the men’s team will continue to excel in the future.

On a Sunday morning, Morrow rose early for an energetic viewing party, feeling a thrill as he watched the nail-biting overtime match against Canada, resulting in a 2-1 victory. It was a moment filled with the excitement and camaraderie he experienced with the “Miracle on Ice” team during the 2026 event.

“We had a text thread going throughout the Olympics, just cheering ‘Go USA’ in everything we did,” Morrow recalled.

Similarly, former Olympian Pat LaFontaine noted how many past USA team members came together to support the current rosters, all contributing letters of encouragement.

LaFontaine quoted the legendary Herb Brooks: “Get behind the wheel and drive the bus. Now it’s your turn.” He is optimistic that America won’t have to wait 46 years for another men’s gold medal.

Morrow, whose achievements include four Stanley Cups with the Islanders, credited Brooks for shaping the current style of U.S. hockey, which focuses on speed, skill, and puck possession.

He believes Brooks would be incredibly proud of how far U.S. hockey has advanced. For LaFontaine, who played in a less optimistic era following the “Miracle,” the situation feels like a significant turnaround.

“We’ve always been told this was a miracle,” he remarked, recalling a sense of doubt that surrounded U.S. hockey. Despite missing gold in the 1984 and 1998 Olympics, LaFontaine silenced critics with his performance in the 1996 World Cup, where he and his teammates secured victory over Canada.

This most recent win marks a significant moment in U.S. hockey history. LaFontaine mentioned that reaching this milestone took years of sacrifice and that the 2026 team is a testament to that legacy.

“We’re filled with pride and gratitude for what this game represents for the United States,” he said, reflecting on the emotional weight of the moment.

Jack Hughes, a star from the New Jersey Devils, scored the winning goal in overtime, sealing the deal for Team USA. Morrow shared his belief that many of the current players have bright futures ahead, perhaps even winning more championships, but emphasized that this gold medal represents the pinnacle of achievement.

LaFontaine and Morrow also highlighted Charlie McAvoy’s outstanding defensive performance in the match, noting his contributions to fending off relentless Canadian advances. “He’s setting an example for future Long Island kids,” Morrow added, proud of McAvoy’s role in this victory.
