Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) says his bid for the White House is over after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis finished second in last week's Iowa caucuses.
Hogan told ABC's “This Week” that the race for the Republican presidential nomination is essentially a “two-person contest” between former President Trump and former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley. He took a swipe at DeSantis' camp this week when discussing Haley's chances of winning the New Hampshire primary.
“I think DeSantis’ campaign is over in Iowa,” he said.
DeSantis came in second in last week's Iowa caucuses with about 21% of support, trailing Trump, who won the caucuses with about 51%. Haley came in third in the state with 19% support.
But DeSantis is now narrowly trailing Trump and Haley in New Hampshire just days before the state's primary begins. According to Hill/Decision Desk headquarters, Ms. Haley's approval rating in the state is about 36%, just about 11 points behind Mr. Trump, while Ms. DeSantis' approval rating is about 5.7%.
Hogan last week endorsed Haley as the Republican candidate, calling her the “best possible candidate” the party could push in the November general election. He also said Sunday that it was “not impossible” for Haley to win the Republican nomination despite Trump's lead in the polls.
“But it's not impossible for her. If she outperforms expectations, I think she'll come into South Carolina with a lot of momentum,” Hogan said of Haley's chances in the Granite State. Ta.
