Hollywood's Democratic Donors Plan Comeback, Push Jeffrey Katzenberg Aside After Biden's Setback

Katzenberg Distances Himself from Democratic Donors

Jeffrey Katzenberg, a co-founder of DreamWorks, is reportedly stepping back from Hollywood’s Democratic donor circle following his unsuccessful efforts to back former President Joe Biden.

Despite Katzenberg’s departure, it seems that Hollywood’s Democratic fundraising landscape has experienced a resurgence recently. Political consultant Mike Murphy commented, “Katzenberg really is like a general who lost only three wars. Democrats really want to develop some colonels to replace him, and I think they’ll show up.” He also noted that even though there are many dissatisfied donors, the urgency created by President Trump’s actions compels them to act. “They just hope they never hear from Jeffrey Katzenberg again,” he remarked.

As previously reported, Katzenberg—who has held significant positions like the CEO of DreamWorks and chairman of the Walt Disney Company—had a tough time convincing some skeptical Democratic contributors that Biden was fit to run again. Last year, during Biden’s reelection efforts, Katzenberg faced doubts from key donors who felt Biden, at his age, might not be able to serve another term.

In an attempt to ease these concerns, Katzenberg organized meetings with Biden at the White House, urging voters to “trust me,” even suggesting they see for themselves through direct conversations with the president. California Governor Gavin Newsom noted that Katzenberg’s regular engagement played a crucial role in rallying support for the campaign.

However, as the 2024 election unfolded, Katzenberg’s prominence as a major Democratic donor significantly faded, particularly after Biden withdrew from the race and Kamala Harris faced a major setback against Trump in late November.

Following a disappointing debate performance from Biden where he struggled with his words, many donors—who had previously contributed over $30 million at Katzenberg’s urging—began to voice their frustrations. One Hollywood megadonor expressed that they felt deceived when Katzenberg dismissed their worries about the president’s health, calling his reassurances “an outright lie.”

There were comments from another donor lamenting that Katzenberg views Biden as a character struggling for relevance and expressing anger over the situation. Some indicated that Katzenberg’s desire to support Biden might stem from feelings of jealousy towards fellow DreamWorks founders David Geffen and Steven Spielberg, especially after the failure of their tech venture, Quibi, in 2020.

As one executive put it, “He’s like a younger brother trying to prove himself to his older brothers. He just can’t help himself.”
