Plans for Deportation Announced
Tom Homan, who oversees border security, mentioned that the administration intends to deport roughly 600,000 individuals illegally residing in the U.S. by the year’s end. This is in addition to the 1.6 million people who have voluntarily left since Trump resumed office, totaling over 2 million departures.
Speaking at the Future Defense Summit, Homan emphasized the administration’s strong stance on immigration enforcement.
“Even if you are in the United States illegally, you are not exempt,” Homan stated. “If we find you, we will arrest you.”
In his remarks, Homan noted that about 70% of those arrested by ICE are categorized as criminal aliens. The rest, he mentioned, don’t have a criminal background, but may still pose national security risks.
He indicated that those without criminal records are lower on the priority list for enforcement, unless they are involved in other illegal activities.
On another note, Tricia McLaughlin from the Department of Homeland Security expressed excitement over what she described as a “fresh start” for the agency under Secretary Kristi Noem, after a period of perceived constraints that lasted four years.
She underscored that federal collaboration has achieved “historic progress” in fulfilling Trump’s commitment to detain and deport illegal immigrants.
“Illegal immigrants are hearing our message: leave now or face the consequences. Migrants are now even turned back before they even reach the border,” she added.
Despite the movement towards mass deportation, the Trump administration continues to face legal hurdles, especially from liberal judges challenging the construction of temporary immigrant detention centers, essential for housing individuals awaiting deportation.
To address these challenges and boost capacity, DHS is reaching out to the Navy for help in establishing detention facilities across the nation.
Reports indicate that DHS has committed $10 billion for this purpose, working alongside the U.S. Army and utilizing Navy resources to facilitate construction and maintenance.
