Explosion Destroys Massachusetts Home, Leaving Injuries

A significant explosion rocked a home in Taunton, Massachusetts, early Wednesday morning, resulting in a fire that caused extensive damage. A 25-year-old mother suffered severe burns, while her 2-year-old child was left in critical condition.

The blast reverberated through snow-covered streets, which had just seen over two feet of snowfall a few days prior. Residents living several blocks away described hearing a loud noise like a thud.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene around 9:50 a.m. to find the building completely devastated.

“The situation is under control now, but this was a very serious event,” Fire Chief Stephen Lavigne mentioned, pointing out that the cold weather made it difficult for firefighters.

The mother and child were quickly taken to the hospital. Mayor Shauna O’Connell remarked that it was unclear if they were inside the house when the explosion occurred.

Authorities declared the home a total loss, evacuating eight residents, and reported that two adjacent houses sustained significant damage from the explosion and resulting fire.

William James Shivers Jr., a nearby resident, shared that he rushed towards the flames to offer assistance. “It’s natural for neighbors to help each other,” he told reporters. “The police and fire teams in Taunton are amazing, and we’re proud to be part of this community.”

Given the frigid temperatures, a warming center was opened for those evacuated from the scene.

At present, the cause of the explosion is still being investigated. State Police fire investigators, along with the State Fire Marshal’s Office, are working with local authorities to determine what led to the incident.

Authorities have asked residents to steer clear of the area as emergency services continue their work.
