Homeless Couple Turns Block into Disturbing Scene in Astoria
A homeless couple has taken over part of a block in the former neighborhood of Mayor Zoran Mamdani, creating what locals describe as a “nauseating love nest.” They reportedly engage in drinking, sexual activities, and even defecate in pizza boxes, all while ignoring the frustrated pleas of nearby residents for some intervention from the city.
According to a recent report, the couple claimed to be living in their “own dumpster” on 30th Street, situated between a Duane Reade store and a New York Sports Club gym in Astoria. Neighbors have expressed serious concerns over the situation.
One neighbor, Chris Singler, shared a troubling morning experience: “At 8:30 a.m. on my way to the gym, there was a man sitting on a camp chair while a woman was defecating with a pizza box under him.” Singler, who has called this neighborhood home for nearly two decades, noted the inappropriateness of such scenes, especially with children nearby. “My wife often goes to the gym at 5:30 a.m. and has witnessed a woman performing oral sex on a man. It’s not how anyone wants to start their day.”
It’s been reported that there are at least four schools, including a kindergarten, within a five-minute walk from this chaotic scene.
When a team of reporters visited the area, they observed the couple, who go by Michael and Marabelle, aggressively confronting a cleaning crew hired for a neighboring building. Michael shouted threats while consuming vodka, highlighting their unwillingness to vacate the spot. “If you’re going to bother my wife, I’m going to mess you up!” he exclaimed.
Despite repeated calls to the police regarding the couple’s behavior, they maintained that there was no evidence of illegal activity, which might explain the city’s hesitance to take action. Following a winter storm that claimed 19 lives earlier this year, Mayor Mamdani had a change of heart regarding homeless camps. However, since this couple’s presence lacks any “structures,” they cannot be forcibly removed.
Astoria, a historically diverse area that is becoming increasingly popular due to gentrification, is known for its rich cultural scene, including renowned dining and a vibrant community. With its proximity to Midtown, it attracts many tourists, yet the situation with this couple has raised eyebrows among residents.
In a twist of irony, even the couple seems puzzled about how they’ve managed to camp out without being removed. “You don’t see anything like this in Astoria,” Marabelle remarked.
