Homeless partygoers removed from Queens home, but the celebration continues

The city has finally cleaned up a dilapidated spot in Queens that had been making headlines, drawing attention due to its unsightly condition. However, a significant problem remains unchanged.

Marabelle and Michael, a couple often found engaging in inappropriate behaviors on 30th Street near Steinway Street, managed to tidy up their makeshift home this week, much to the relief of nearby residents who had been avoiding the area for over a month.

By Friday morning, their presence was noticeably diminished, but Michael lingered, declining assistance after Marabelle was taken to the hospital.

“I’m just waiting for her here; I really hope she’s okay,” Michael, who claims to be a former Marine, mentioned.

This couple was removed by the Department of Homeless Services, the NYPD, and the Department of Sanitation for their public displays of affection.

They had initially shifted their setup to a busier block on 30th Street, where they congregated in front of a fertility clinic.

“It’s going to be a fantastic summer—America’s 250th anniversary is coming up. People like us who enjoy a good time will have fun,” Marabelle said.

By the end of the day, their new spot was dismantled, yet Michael, who refused a shelter offer, expressed his determination to stay in the area.

Local resident Chris Singler, whose wife witnessed the couple’s public antics, breathed a sigh of relief, at least for the moment.

“I’m just really glad the streets are cleaner now. Getting up for the gym at 5:30 AM is tough enough without stepping over something like that,” the 46-year-old remarked.

Astoria real estate executive Charles Sciberras criticized the mayor’s hands-off approach to addressing the issue.

“This is bad for business. The major issue is the mayor. He’s not handling it well,” Sciberras stated. “Previously, [Mayor] Adams managed it more effectively. When people were a problem, they were gone.”

“They’ll be back, though. It’s a cycle, plain and simple. You can’t just make them disappear,” the 75-year-old added.
