An Oregon homeless woman who was seen on horrifying footage pushing a 3-year-old girl face-first into railroad tracks has been found guilty of a non-insane crime and sentenced to 10 years in a psychiatric hospital.
On December 28, 2022, Brianna Lace Workman, 33, pushed a girl, Zoe Rodriguez, off a MAX platform onto the tracks at the Gateway Transit Center in Portland.
“The child landed face-first on a metal rail and rock and was quickly rescued,” Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt said at the time.
The girl was standing next to her mother Catalina when she was shoved, but quickly got up and reached out to good Samaritans who jumped in to help, video of the horrifying drama showed.
She surprisingly survived the ordeal, although she had small red marks on her face and a severe headache.
Records show Workman had been homeless intermittently since 2011, living on the city’s streets. Quoted from Oregon Live.
She was initially found to be mentally sane to stand trial in November. But Circuit Judge Nan Waller ultimately ruled that Ms. Workman was unable to understand her crimes because of her schizoaffective disorder.
Workman was found guilty Wednesday of assault, attempted assault, recklessly endangering another person, disorderly conduct and obstructing public transportation, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office announced. This was announced by the District Attorney’s Office..
She will spend up to 10 years in a state psychiatric hospital, during which time she will be eligible for conditional release or discharge if she is determined to no longer pose a danger to others.
“I think this is a really frightening case for the community,” prosecutor Julian Samuels said after the short trial. “This resolution shows that people are not only being held accountable for their actions, but also receiving the care they need.”
