Discovery of Homemade Pipe Bombs in Colorado Consignment Store

A consignment store in Colorado stumbled upon a stash of homemade pipe bombs tucked away in one of its storage boxes on Tuesday. The clerk, however, is baffled about their origin.

Just prior to closing time, Barely Spent Consignment, a quaint shop located in Craig, Colorado, alerted local police about a “suspicious item.” A news release from the Craig Police Department confirmed the report.

Upon arrival, officers discovered the collection of the homemade explosives inside a storage box. It remains unclear whether these items were intended for sale, abandoned by customers, or possibly donated.

In a state of surprise, the authorities decided to call in the bomb squad from the Grand Junction Police Department for assistance. The bomb, equipped with a cap and fuse, was safely detonated later that evening, according to reports from the police.

A video shared by the Craig Police Station captures a dark field, momentarily lit up by nearby police sirens.

“Fire in the hole!” someone can be heard yelling off-camera before a loud explosion echoes, reminiscent of cannon fire.

Despite the unsettling find, the consignment shop maintained its spirit of adventure, promoting its “hunt to find the treasure” as stated on its website.

The store noted, “While we cannot say we know what we’ll find, what was discovered today was a homemade explosive device.”

They also recognized that the explosives “could have come from anywhere” in the past, including various rooms and garages that had been cleaned out. There’s still uncertainty about when or how the bomb found its way there.

Barely Spent Consignment joked that “there’s never a dull moment” at their shop, while a local humorously quipped, “Were you trying to make a splash?”

This isn’t just an isolated incident; over recent years, a number of old bombs from previous conflicts have surfaced due to erosion and treasure hunters.

In February 2025, more than 170 World War II bombs were found in a British park beneath a children’s play area. In October 2024, authorities called in a bomb squad to open a Centennial Time Capsule at the World War I Museum in Kansas City due to concerns of potential explosives inside.
