A homeowner in San Antonio, Texas, said he opened fire after a robber who stole an SUV in his driveway last month opened fire as he fled.

Soto told KENS he got out of bed and grabbed a gun because he was worried they were going to break into his home.

The man told police that when he went down the stairs and opened the front door, he saw a frightened person inside the SUV.

Soto added to KENS that the suspect ran down the driveway and got into a “getaway” vehicle.

It added that Soto told police that the lookout fired a gun at him as he tried to get into the getaway car, and Soto fired back.

“He tried to close the door, but he couldn’t,” Soto told KENS. “That’s when he fired, when I fired back, and they took off.”

Police said Soto fired two shots into the ground after the second suspect fired once.

No one inside the home, including Soto, was injured, KENS reported.

“This is my home,” he told the station. “If you want to leave your car unlocked, if you want to leave your doors unlocked, you should be able to do that. The parents of these children are the ones who care for their children and what their children do. We should watch what they are doing.”
