Homeowners in LA report that ballots are being sent to former residents as well.

Homeowners in Los Angeles are expressing frustration over receiving ballots for individuals who have moved away, in some cases, years ago.

According to reports, these ballots, which continue arriving in the mail, include former residents and even family members who left the area, some as long as six years ago.

A federal lawsuit alleges that California holds over 873,000 inactive voter registrations, with some dating back more than ten years, suggesting a significant issue with how the state manages its voting records.

Sue Pascoe, a resident of Pacific Palisades, is one of many affected. She lost her home in a fire back in January 2025 but had already been receiving ballots for family members who no longer live in California. “If I’m registered elsewhere, why am I still getting my ballot here?” she questioned.

Pascoe has three family members who have all relocated; one is in the military overseas, another is registered in Texas, and her daughter moved almost six years ago. Despite her efforts to update records and stop the ballots, the mailings persist.

Sharon Kilbride, also from Pacific Palisades, mentioned noticing similar issues. She allowed some individuals in an assistance program to use her address back in the day, but even now, ballots are still arriving for them. “One has been missing for four years and the other five years,” she remarked.

Pia Altavilla, another resident, shared her experience, saying her family still receives ballots for her brother who moved to Utah four years ago. She pointed out how this unwanted mail symbolizes the disconnect many homeowners feel between where people actually live and where their ballots are being sent.

These homeowners’ concerns are now intersecting with a growing legal dispute regarding California’s voter registration system. Just before the primary election on June 2, a federal lawsuit was filed against State Secretary Shirley Weber, claiming the state is neglecting its duty to maintain accurate voter registration as required by federal law.

This lawsuit, initiated by an Orange County Supervisor alongside the American Independence Party, calls attention to the vast number of inactive registrations. Some of these have been dormant for multiple election cycles, further highlighting the challenge of maintaining an accurate voter roll.

As these issues gain traction, it’s becoming clear the topic resonates beyond California. One social media user, for instance, shared that even after all six adult children registered at different addresses, they still received ballots in their old home. “I still receive tons of ballots for them every election!!” she wrote, echoing the frustrations of many.

The situation raises questions about accountability in voter registration processes, leaving many residents feeling perplexed and concerned.
