‘Honey, I’m a woman’: Mom says she, her 7-year-old girl saw naked male in YMCA female locker room who brushed off her protest

The mother said she and her 7-year-old daughter met a naked man with exposed genitals earlier this month in the women’s locker room at the North Kansas City YMCA. WDAF-TV reported.

The mother told the station that she and her daughter had just finished swimming lessons and estimated that hundreds of children were present, and that they had entered the women’s locker room and changed it.

“This is a matter of having someone show their body parts to my child and show them to my child in the room where she should be safe from such things.”

Her mother added to WDAF that she heard the man’s voice immediately.

When the mom involved asked the man what he was doing in a female-only space, the mother recalled the station saying something about the effect that the man had said, “Honey, I’m a woman.”

The mother and her daughter sprinted out of the locker room, WDAF said.

A mother who spoke to the station on Monday added to WDAF that she and her daughter were not the only ones to witness the incident.

“My 11 year old uses that locker room, especially after going to the pool, where you need to use a closed shower or try to change it as soon as possible,” said Angela Bush, a YMCA member.

The YMCA of Greater Kansas City, the North Kansas City Police Department and the Clay County Prosecutor’s Office have launched an investigation, WDAF said.

The YMCA provided the following statement, the station said:

The YMCA in Greater Kansas City is aware of the incident reported in the locker room of the North Kansas City YMCA on April 12, 2025. We are continuing to investigate this incident and are unable to provide details at this time. We also work with the North Kansas City Police Department in conducting the investigation. The safety and well-being of all our members is a priority and we take this concern seriously.

We are permitted to follow all state and local laws and individuals are permitted to use the locker rooms or toilets they identify. North Kansas City YMCA also has four private universal change rooms available, apart from the larger shared locker rooms, for those who prefer the privacy they offer.

Members are always asked to wear towels, wraps or other clothing to ensure that privacy standards for all Y members are respected and safety is a priority when using any of the shared locker rooms.

The North Kansas City Police Department is investigating a report of a vulgar April 12 revelations at the YMCA but has confirmed that it has not shared any further details, WDAF said.

The mother, who wanted to remain anonymous to protect her family, added to the station that it wasn’t a gender identity issue.
