A tragic incident unfolded when a man on his honeymoon in Florida was struck by lightning. The 29-year-old victim had recently traveled to Colorado with his new wife when the accident occurred while he was standing in shallow water on a beach.
According to Volusia County Beach Safety, the man was initially taken to a local hospital in critical condition but sadly passed away later due to his injuries. Tammy Malfer, the director of safety for the area, mentioned that there was still distance between the beach and the storm, making this incident quite unusual.
An eyewitness noted how surprising it was, stating that the sky was clear and the storm seemed far away. Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood expressed his condolences for the young couple, stating the loss was particularly heartbreaking.
In addition to this tragic event, two other individuals were reportedly “indirectly struck” by lightning while golfing nearby. Both were taken to the hospital for treatment after the incident.
Florida is known for having the highest frequency of lightning strikes, with approximately 1.2 million strikes annually, according to the Florida Department of Health. As of now, this incident marks the first lightning-related death in Florida for 2025, which is particularly concerning given the number of similar incidents already reported this year across other states.
