The Hong Kong Post Office will halt the acceptance of air mail items, including goods destined for the US, commencing April 27, as announced by the Post Office.
“To send items to the US, residents in Hong Kong will need to confront exorbitant and unreasonable charges due to the US’s irrational and coercive actions. Other postal parcels, such as document mail, will remain unaffected,” stated the Hong Kong government in a release on Wednesday local time. release.
The semi-autonomous government of the Chinese city asserted that the US would “unreasonably and coercively impose tariffs on its behalf. Hong Kong mail will not collect so-called tariffs for the US and will suspend acceptance of mail items, including products heading to the US.”
Hong Kong referenced the Trump administration’s choice to terminate the “de-minimis” exemption for postal items shipped from Hong Kong to the US and the increase in tariffs on mail including goods sent to the US starting May 2nd.
Hong Kong is subjected to the same tariffs as China. Trump intensifies a trade conflict with the world’s second-largest economy, imposing tariffs of up to 145%. In retaliation, China enacted a 125% tariff.
The Hong Kong government has also reached out to senders of items that are yet to be dispatched to the US, announcing that “we will arrange for returns and postage refunds starting April 22nd.”
