Hong Kong Woman Found Guilty of Abandoning Stillborn Baby

A Hong Kong woman has been convicted of abandoning her stillborn baby in a freezer at a Taiwanese hospital. This troubling incident took place in 2022, involving a 25-year-old named Huang who had moved to Taiwan for academic research. She delivered a stillborn boy at just 21 weeks of pregnancy.

Huang, who was at a hospital linked to China Medical University, placed her child’s body in the hospital freezer shortly after giving birth. Following this, she arranged for a funeral service to pick up the baby’s remains and had expressed intentions to pay the deposit by December 10 of that year.

After an extended period away from the public eye, Huang was eventually apprehended by Taiwanese authorities, leading to court proceedings that began in April.

Huang’s Defense

During the trial, Huang maintained her innocence, asserting she never intended to abandon her child’s body. She recounted that she hadn’t realized she was pregnant until visiting a doctor regarding stomach issues, at which point she was informed that the fetus had already died.

“I felt so isolated and far from home. I didn’t know where to turn for help; I couldn’t even afford basic food. After the baby died, I was at a loss for how to proceed,” she explained.

While Huang acknowledged signing paperwork for the funeral service, she contended that grief clouded her comprehension of the documents. Her attorney argued that since the baby was under 24 weeks old, it should be categorized as medical waste rather than a deceased person.

The court, however, recognized that the fetus had developed into a distinct human form, measuring 28 cm and weighing 0.345 kg. Considering Huang’s situation as an international student dealing with financial and emotional turmoil, the court ultimately issued a four-month sentence but suspended it for two years, showing leniency amid the circumstances.
