Anthony Hopkins Opens Up About Sobriety Journey
In a recent interview, Sir Anthony Hopkins shared his personal journey toward sobriety and the unique voice he heard, which he believes was divine guidance. This conversation reflects on his faith and experiences as he prepares for the release of his memoir, “We Did OK, Kid,” slated for next month.
The 87-year-old actor recounted a pivotal moment from December 29, 1975, when he found himself driving under the influence in California. At that point, he admits, he didn’t really care if he lived or died. However, a sudden realization about the potential consequences of his actions struck him, and he reached out to his former agent for help.
He described this moment as a “revelation.” Hopkins recalled, “Some deep, powerful thought or voice spoke to me from within and said, ‘It’s all over. You can start living now. And don’t forget that moment, because it all came together for a purpose.’” This experience changed the course of his life.
Since then, Hopkins has won two Academy Awards and acted in countless films. He reflected on the voice he heard, saying it felt “masculine” and rational, almost like listening to a radio. The urge to drink vanished, and he has maintained his sobriety for nearly 50 years.
“I have no other theory of divinity or that life force inside all of us,” he continued. “I believe it is consciousness.” He also reminisced about another significant moment when, during a drive through Los Angeles in the late 1970s, he felt compelled to stop at a Catholic church. There, he expressed to a young priest that he had found God.
Both incidents have reinforced his belief that God is a very personal entity. “What happened that morning was when that voice said, ‘It’s over. Now you can start living,’ I knew that was a force far beyond my comprehension,” Hopkins shared. “It’s not up in the clouds; it’s here. I decided to call it God.” His reflections reveal a deep-seated connection to spirituality that continues to shape his life.
