Horror Film ‘Obsession’ Boosts One Woman’s Career While Hurting Another’s

“Obsession” star Inde Navarrette shared on Tuesday that she hasn’t landed any acting roles in over a year since the indie horror comedy’s release.

“I didn’t work for a year and a half after ‘Obsession’ came out. I kept auditioning, but nothing materialized,” she mentioned. It’s been quite complicated.

The film was made for $750,000 and has already raked in over $300 million at the box office, according to reports.

On Twitch, she has around 70,000 followers, although many of her older streams seem to have vanished. However, her YouTube channel features clips of her playing the survival horror game “Outlast” and the action-adventure “The Last of Us.”

Some nostalgic clips of her past gameplay on Twitch have recently gone viral, which fans claim is quite clever. In an interview with GQ, Navarrette reminisced, “I built my own PC during COVID. Really got into PC gaming.”

“I’ve really grown to appreciate watching YouTubers like Markiplier evolve. So, I thought, why not? If you’re not busy with a show and enjoy gaming, streaming seems like a natural fit.” It has indeed been fun for her.

Navarrette is on the cusp of becoming a Hollywood sensation. She’ll be featured in Sombre’s upcoming music video for “My Body Isn’t Ready.” Moreover, she has received glowing features in magazines like Wonderland and Interview.

Interestingly, some have pointed out how Navarrette’s optimistic demeanor stands in contrast to “Obsession” art director Sally Choi, who recently made headlines over her pay for the film. Choi reportedly earned just over $6,700 for her work, which she expressed disappointment about, feeling she should have secured better compensation, especially after investing in the project.

Navarrette likely aims to leverage her success with “Obsession” to elevate her career. Although rumors suggest she earned around $20,000 for her role—modest compared to many in Hollywood—it’s still a decent paycheck for someone just starting.

Director Curry Barker addressed Choi’s concerns in an interview, expressing admiration for the art department’s contributions and emphasizing that the limited budget meant those taking risks might reap the rewards. He hopes that everyone involved in the film can find lucrative opportunities ahead, similar to his own success.

And it seems Navarrette is well on her way to doing just that. Barker has recently signed an eight-figure deal with Blumhouse Atomic Monsters and Universal for future original horror films, already having filmed his next project, “Anything But Ghosts,” featuring well-known actors like Aaron Paul and Bryce Dallas Howard.
