During Wednesday night’s New Year’s Eve broadcast, co-host Andy Cohen, drink in hand, took some shots at outgoing New York City Mayor Eric Adams as the clock struck midnight.
It’s no secret that CNN’s Anderson Cooper and Cohen enjoy a drink or two during their New Year’s festivities. This year was no different, featuring a mix of humor and hard liquor. At one point, Cohen shared his candid thoughts about Adams, describing his final moments as chaotic and frankly unsettling. “I just want to say, he’s been forgiven,” Cohen declared, despite Cooper’s attempts to steer the conversation elsewhere.
Cohen continued, “Forgiveness granted, let’s ride off into the sunset. You’ve partied for four years; go dance at all the parties.” This year’s remarks are reminiscent of previous comments Cohen made about another former mayor, Bill de Blasio, where he said, “The only thing that Democrats and Republicans can agree on is what a bad mayor he was.” It’s clear Cohen doesn’t hold back.
In a noteworthy development, U.S. District Judge Dale E. Ho dismissed a high-profile corruption case against Adams, meaning it can’t be brought back again. This dismissal came after a request from the Trump administration’s Justice Department.
Meanwhile, Adams’ successor, Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani, took office in a midnight ceremony officiated by New York State Attorney General Letitia James. Mamdani, who made headlines by using the Quran during the swearing-in, has become the first Muslim mayor in New York City’s history.
NewsBusters deputy editor Nicholas Fondacaro highlighted Cohen’s comments, suggesting that Cooper seemed to try to distance himself from the conversation, but the camera focused on his reaction.
Though Cohen’s comments might spark some controversy, they’re certainly not the first time he’s expressed such strong opinions. It remains to be seen how Mamdani’s leadership will shape future conversations in New York City.
