Controversy Surrounds Military Fitness Standards Remarks
On Tuesday, “The View” criticized remarks made by Pete Hegseth, the Secretary of War, regarding concerns over “fat shaming” in light of new military fitness standards.
During a speech to commanders at Quantico Marine Base in Virginia, Hegseth expressed discontent with “fat troops,” stating, “It’s completely unacceptable to see fat generals and admirals at the Pentagon and in major commands globally. That’s just a bad look.”
Co-host Joy Behar questioned, “Why is he so focused on fat?” Sunny Hostin chimed in, emphasizing Hegseth’s fixation on fitness as problematic.
In response to Hegseth’s comments, Alyssa Farah Griffin noted, “All these individuals from diverse backgrounds unite for American values. So, it’s puzzling why we would need to criticize the military to discuss improvements.” She also added that while recruitment goals were set for 2024 and 2025, the vastness of the military remains a critical factor.
Griffin further remarked on Hegseth’s approach, saying, “I respect his service, but I don’t agree with disparaging others’ contributions.”
Behar reiterated her concerns, exclaiming, “And fat shaming!” She seems quite vocal about this issue.
Hegseth has publicly committed to restoring a “warrior mentality” and enhancing standards while aiming to reform military dynamics.
Sunny Hostin found Hegseth’s speech perplexing, exclaiming, “The optics were terrible.” She pointed out the contradiction in his approach to raising fitness standards while implementing haze policies and questioning existing diversity measures.
“His assertion that combatants must adhere to the highest physical standards among male troops, alongside claims of ‘fat troops,’ doesn’t add up,” she noted.
Hegseth further urged officers to “resign” if they opposed the removal of certain diversity initiatives and restrictions on battlefield force. He stated, “If this message doesn’t resonate with you, then I encourage you to act honorably and resign. We value your service, but I believe most of you will see things differently.”
