House approves AI for Main Street Act with strong backing from both parties

New Bill Aims to Boost AI Education for Small Businesses

On Tuesday evening, the House of Commons approved a bill intended to enhance access to artificial intelligence (AI) education for small and medium-sized enterprises.

The AI for Main Street Act received significant bipartisan backing, passing with a vote of 395-14, although there were some dissenters—eleven Republicans and three Democrats chose to oppose it.

Rep. Mark Alford, a Republican from Missouri and the bill’s sponsor, expressed optimism about the future, stating, “Main Street is on the brink of substantial transformation. The AI revolution isn’t just on the horizon; it’s already upon us.”

Alford further emphasized the importance of the legislation, saying, “We aim to ensure that no entrepreneur or job creator is overlooked. Our AI for Main Street Act provides small businesses with the necessary resources, education, and training to use AI responsibly.”

The proposal aims to direct the Small Business Administration (SBA) alongside its Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) to assist startups in learning how to adopt AI technology. This initiative is designed to fit seamlessly within existing programs established by SBDCs.

The SBA and SBDC play vital roles in providing small businesses with access to funding, sharing information about emerging technologies, refining business plans, and managing financial and human resources. According to the SBA, there are around 900 service locations connected to 62 SBDC centers nationwide.

It’s noteworthy that the bill does not allocate additional funds for the direction related to AI, which leaves some potential uncertainty. Alford has voiced concerns that large corporations will likely adopt AI tools quickly, while smaller businesses may struggle to keep up.

During a speech on the floor, Alford stressed that it’s crucial for small business owners to grasp not only the capabilities of AI but also its safe, ethical, and effective usage. He added, “This bill empowers individuals rather than replacing them. I take pride that the House has passed this bipartisan effort to protect small businesses.”

The bill will now head to the Senate for further consideration.
