House committee considers transit safety following Iryna Zarutska stabbing in Charlotte

House Addresses Public Transport Safety After Tragic Incident

The House of Representatives is engaging in discussions aimed at improving safety in public transport, particularly following a recent tragic incident involving Ukrainian refugees in Charlotte, North Carolina.

A roundtable event organized by the House Transport and Infrastructure Committee is set to take place, featuring federal transport officials, law enforcement, and union representatives. David Rouzer, a Republican from North Carolina and chairman of the Highways and Transportation Subcommittee, is leading the discussions in light of the incident where 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska was fatally stabbed on the Charlotte light rail.

Rouzer emphasized, “The recent murder on Charlotte’s light rail underscores the urgent need for safety to be at the forefront of our national transport conversations.”

The tragic death of Zarutska has heightened the urgency surrounding public transport issues that were already part of the committee’s agenda. The roundtable discussions aim to gather insights and strategies from officials to address crime within the public transport system.

Expected participants include Mark Molinaro, former House member and leader at Federal Transport Management, along with Paul Sketteras, President of the American Public Transport Association. Other attendees will be law enforcement leaders and members of various transport bodies.

A spokesperson for the House Transportation Committee shared that these discussions are vital for informing upcoming legislation, which encompasses a range of comprehensive transportation reauthorization efforts, sometimes referred to as the “highway bill.”

Additionally, there’s a concern that a lack of action against violent crimes in public transport may further erode public trust in the entire system.

Zarutska was reportedly attacked on her way home from work on August 22. The suspect, DeCarlos DeJuan Brown Jr., has been charged with first-degree murder for the unprovoked attack. Zarutska, who fled Ukraine amid the Russian invasion in 2022, was a community college student working at a local pizza shop at the time of her death.

This incident has drawn attention to broader issues surrounding public safety and crime policies in urban areas, with some arguing that lenient justice systems contribute to rising violence in mass transit.

While the roundtable aims for a bipartisan solution, tensions remain. Democratic leaders have criticized the politicization of Zarutska’s death, with House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries expressing discontent over the way her tragic fate has been used in political discussions.
