The House Rules Committee moved a little closer to an extension late Thursday, approving a two-year extension of the federal government’s surveillance tool known as Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).
The committee approved the bill, but it is now up for debate and a vote on amendments, with a possible vote on Friday.

The House Rules Committee met Thursday at 7:45 p.m. to reintroduce the FISA authorization bill to the floor for the second time this week.
The bill was sponsored by Speaker Mike Johnson but blocked by more than a dozen House Republicans.

On an 8-4 vote, the House Rules Committee is advancing a rule setting up a discussion on FISA reauthorization, with a vote on the rule likely to occur Friday morning. If the rules pass, a final vote could take place on the same day.
