House Democrat joins Republican-led January 6 committee and criticizes Trump

New Panel Formed to Examine January 6th Capitol Riot

Representative Jasmine Crockett from Texas has been appointed to a newly established Republican-led panel looking into the Capitol Riot that occurred on January 6th. This announcement was made by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries from New York and other Democratic leaders on Monday, following the official formation of the subcommittee earlier this month.

Crockett has voiced her criticism of the Republicans for this initiative, emphasizing during a press conference with New Democrats that former President Donald Trump should have faced conviction for his role in the 2021 incidents. She stated, “There were attempts to tear down democracy that day. They laid the groundwork for what we are facing now. If they had acted properly, we might not be experiencing this.”

Despite being impeached by the House after the riots, Trump was acquitted by the Senate, which failed to meet the threshold required for conviction on charges of high crimes and misdemeanors.

Trump has consistently denied responsibility for the unrest, blaming Democrats instead. He has also pardoned some of the individuals involved in the riot.

Crockett expressed concerns that the panel is being used by Republicans as a means to create distractions and deepen divisions. “We’re not going to let them whitewash this,” she declared. “Our responsibility is to uncover the truth and defend democracy. This isn’t about party lines; it’s about the Constitution.”

She further mentioned, “We all promised to protect the American people. Our leaders should safeguard democracy rather than undermine it. I want to ensure the truth about January 6th is known.” The subcommittee is chaired by a Republican from Georgia, who previously oversaw the House Selection Committee that had been tasked with examining the events of that day.

The chair noted that while previous inquiries have provided valuable insights, much work remains. Their aim is to answer the outstanding questions, bring forth all relevant facts, and implement reforms necessary to prevent such security failures in the future.

In addition to Crockett, Democratic Representatives Eric Swalwell from California and Jared Moskowitz from Florida, along with Jamie Raskin, a prominent member of the House Judiciary Committee, are also serving on the subcommittee. The final approval for the panel’s composition will depend on the majority within the committee.

Fox News Digital reached out to the White House for comments regarding Crockett’s statements.
