House Democrats are preparing to present a resolution this week that seeks to allocate trillions of dollars for reparations to Black Americans.
Representative Summer Lee from Pennsylvania is expected to unveil the resolution on Thursday. Earlier, she met with fellow lawmakers and activists on Capitol Hill during an event titled “Why Can’t We Wait: Advance Compensatory Justice in Our Life.” Lee emphasizes that reparations are both “moral and legal obligations” for the country.
“This is a pivotal moment in shaping society. A new society is being formed, and we need to be the ones guiding that change,” Lee stated.
As for the Trump administration, Lee commented that their true intention seems to be building a future that mirrors their vision, adding that President Trump is looking to dismantle the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives throughout the federal government, calling it “nothing more than a Penn stroke.”
She also mentioned, “The fight to uplift Black individuals must be much more significant.”
Lee’s resolution references the history of slavery in the U.S., Jim Crow laws, and various other racist legislation to support the proposed spending on behalf of Black American descendants.
Furthermore, Representative Ayanna Pressley from Massachusetts introduced her own bill in February, advocating for a federal committee to study slavery and consider reparation proposals within the U.S.
Pressley stated, “We’re witnessing a moment of heightened anti-Black sentiment, and we are not going to remain silent. We will continue to strive for racial justice.”
This bill aims to create specific proposals for reparations directed at African Americans who are descendants of slaves. It will also establish a federal committee tasked with examining the enduring effects of slavery and its aftermath, as described by Pressley.
Recently, Democratic leaders in states like California have brought up the idea of reparations, with supporters attributing it to the legacy of racist policies that have led to disparities in housing, education, and health for Black communities.
California Democrats are actively working on legislation for reparations, pushing for the passage of the Reparations Act.
