House Democrats investigate FBI Director Kash Patel regarding drinking claims

Kash Patel Sues the Atlantic for Defamation

Kash Patel, the FBI Director, recently joined Maria Bartiromo to address concerns regarding the ongoing investigation into 11 scientists associated with the U.S. national security sector who are either missing or deceased, and potentially linked to foreign adversaries. He elaborated on China’s persistent cyberattacks and espionage efforts targeting U.S. infrastructure. Notably, Patel adamantly rejected the Atlantic’s allegations of excessive alcohol consumption, and he has filed a defamation lawsuit, while also mentioning the FBI’s notable crime reduction over the last 14 months.

Meanwhile, House Democrats are initiating an inquiry into Patel following a controversial article in The Atlantic that claimed he “alarmed colleagues” due to his alleged heavy drinking and erratic conduct. Representative Jamie Raskin and other Democrats are pushing for Patel to answer a 10-question survey under oath regarding “risky drinking behavior.”

“It’s one thing for an FBI agent to exhibit these behaviors, but for the FBI director to be implicated is alarming and suggests a broader public emergency,” the lawmakers wrote in a letter to Patel late Tuesday.

Patel has strongly denied these accusations, stating that he has “never been drunk on the job.”

In the wake of Patel’s lawsuit against The Atlantic and its author, Sarah Fitzpatrick, for $250 million, the investigations have been ramping up. The article primarily relies on anonymous sources and claims to report several instances of Patel’s alleged drunkenness, including an “outburst” that was supposedly triggered by technology issues.

“The defendants may express criticism toward FBI leadership, but they crossed a legal boundary with this article filled with untruths aimed at discrediting Director Patel and pushing him out of office,” his complaint alleges.

The Atlantic has defended its reporting, labeling Patel’s lawsuit as “without merit.”

In response to the article, those in the Trump administration have come out to publicly support Patel, emphasizing that crimes are at record lows, thanks to the leadership of both President Trump and Patel.

Additionally, Raskin has urged House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan to ensure Patel testifies under oath if he doesn’t comply with their requests. However, Republican representatives have described the inquiry as “disingenuous.”

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche expressed his concerns regarding the validity of the article’s anonymous claims but noted that he had not actually read it. Meanwhile, White House press secretary Caroline Levitt reaffirmed that Secretary Patel is a crucial part of the administration’s efforts in maintaining law and order.
