Firefighters in Canada came to the rescue of a dog trapped in a burning house after the pet accidentally bit a battery-operated glove, igniting a fire early Saturday morning, according to local authorities.
The Ottawa Fire Department reported that emergency crews were called to a residence in Orleans shortly after 9 a.m. when a monitoring service indicated that a fire alarm had been triggered.
The homeowner was on his way back and noticed the flames on his security camera. Witnesses driving by also alerted 911 after spotting the fire through the windows.
Firefighters arrived in about four minutes to find heavy smoke and flames pouring from a bay window on the first floor. They quickly took action, battling the fire that had breached the windows before entering the home to continue extinguishing the flames.
After searching the property, firefighters located the dog and safely brought it outside. Thankfully, no pets were harmed during the incident, and nobody was at home when the fire broke out.
Authorities mentioned that while there were no injuries reported, one adult and one child were evacuated from the vicinity.
Following an investigation, the Ottawa Fire Department concluded that the blaze was caused by the dog chewing on a heated ski glove that contained a lithium-ion battery. Security footage showed the dog dragging the glove onto the couch, damaging the battery and igniting the fire.
Fire officials cautioned that damaged lithium-ion batteries can present a significant fire hazard and recommended that residents securely store battery-operated devices, ensuring they are out of reach of pets and children.
