Speculation regarding a potential early retirement of Rep. Neil Dunn (R-Florida) has raised concerns among House Republicans. Lawmakers indicated that Dunn is contemplating stepping down before completing his term, which is set to end in 2026, and he is currently discussing this with House leadership.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, avoided directly addressing Dunn’s intentions but encouraged him to continue serving in Congress. “He’s a well-liked figure in Congress and I think he has a lot to contribute. I’ll need to speak with him about his plans, but I hope he stays,” Johnson mentioned.
Dunn himself offered no comments when approached by reporters on the matter. Following the recent unexpected resignation of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, there’s a rising sense of urgency in the Republican Party to prevent further departures.
If any Republicans do leave before the special election in March to fill Greene’s vacated seat, the balance of power in the House could shift to a narrow 217-214 majority for the Republicans. Johnson is now bracing for this fragile margin as the party prepares for an upcoming special election to replace the late Rep. Doug LaMalfa from California.
The dynamics are further complicated by a crowded primary race awaiting Dunn’s possible retirement announcement. In Florida, special primary elections are typically conducted about 120 to 130 days after a member exits, with the general election following approximately 70 to 80 days later.
Engagements regarding the timing of Dunn’s special election are ongoing between House members and Governor Ron DeSantis’ office. While there’s uncertainty, sources suggest Dunn may not resign early unless required by election regulations.
