House GOP splits over 'absurd' bill to cut funding for NYC while Mamdani serves as mayor

Republican Lawmaker Critiques Party’s Defunding Strategy After New York Mayoral Election

New York City’s sole Republican representative is voicing her discontent regarding her party’s strategy to defund the city following Zoran Mamdani’s recent election as mayor.

“Attempts by individuals in my party to gain political leverage by targeting New York City are serious issues,” Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-N.Y.) expressed to FOX News Digital. “We will not stand for this.” She emphasized her unique position as the only Republican representative from the area, noting, “My constituents didn’t vote for Mamdani, and it’s frustrating that some in Washington are eager to penalize an entire city for the actions of a few.”

This statement follows Georgia Rep. Buddy Carter’s announcement of the American Transfer of Funds Act, or Mamdani’s Law, aimed at distancing financial support from entities perceived as against national interests.

The proposed two-page legislation stipulates that during Mamdani’s term as mayor, “unobligated Federal funds available” for New York City would be revoked, effectively halting any Federal funding for the city.

Scheduled for introduction on Friday, Malliotakis took aim at Carter’s initiative, calling it “laughable” and an affront to the city’s dedicated taxpayers, highlighting that many of them did not back Mamdani’s mayoral bid.

She pointed out that New York City contributes significant federal taxes and that these funds play a vital role in supporting national priorities like education and transportation.

Malliotakis criticized Republicans who would seek campaign funds from a city they target with punitive legislation, stating, “Those who sponsor a bill that harms our city shouldn’t come here asking for donations.”

Mamdani, a socialist, secured the mayoral position but is projected to have won by just over 50%, with strong support from Brooklyn and select areas of the Bronx and Queens. In contrast, Malliotakis’ district leaned towards former Governor Cuomo.

Malliotakis is clear about her stance: while she opposes funding for socialist policies, cutting funding for essential services is absolutely absurd.

In response to her remarks, Carter argued that Malliotakis is, in many ways, a protector of New York City’s values against socialism. “If more individuals stood up like Nicole, we wouldn’t be in this situation,” he stated, insisting that taxpayers need not support policies they disagree with. The Mamdani Act is intended to clarify that position.

As the new administration prepares to take office, tensions within the Republican Party could foreshadow upcoming conflicts. Although there is an effort to leverage Mamdani’s election against Democrats, the party must recognize the potential backlash from within its own ranks among those representing New York.
