The House Energy and Commerce Committee will hold hearings next week on several technology policy bills, including the newly announced comprehensive data privacy bill and the Children’s Online Safety Act, the committee announced late Tuesday.
Wednesday’s hearing will include discussion of the U.S. Privacy Rights Act, announced Sunday by Committee Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) and Senate Commerce Committee Chairwoman Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.).
The bill would establish regulations for how companies collect and use American Airlines data, preempting state laws that have emerged in recent years to replace federal guidelines.
The hearing will also consider discussions regarding updates to the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the Children’s Online Safety Act (KOSA). The House version of the bipartisan bill introduced by the Senate Commerce Committee in July was introduced Tuesday by Rep. Kathy Castor (D-Fla.).
The House version of COPPA 2.0 was co-sponsored by Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Mich.), and the House version of KOSA was co-sponsored by Rep. Gus Biliarakis (R-Fla.) and Erin Houchin (R-Ind.). ) was co-sponsored. ) and Kim Schrier (D-Washington).
COPPA 2.0 will update children’s privacy protections online and add regulations on how technology companies collect and use data from users under 16. Targeted advertising will also be prohibited.
KOSA will add regulations aimed at alleviating concerns about the use of certain tools and features and their impact on children’s mental health.
Pressure is mounting on Congress to act on growing concerns about the impact of technology platforms on children. The CEOs of Meta, TikTok, Snap, Discord and X faced questions about their impact on youth usage during a heated Senate committee hearing in January.
