House Passes Major Military Spending Bill for Trump’s Signature
The House has sent to President Trump a substantial piece of legislation, often referred to as the “big and beautiful bill,” that allocates $150 billion to the Department of Defense. It’s quite a hefty plan, embedding elements of Trump’s domestic agenda, which includes various priorities like cuts to Medicaid and an emphasis on fossil fuel production.
In what might be seen as a significant achievement, the Republican-controlled House voted 218-214 after a lengthy and intense negotiation period, during which differing opinions between House and Senate Republicans were reconciled. This has, I think, been quite intense, considering the backdrop of the ongoing political landscape.
Specifically, this bill aims for new defense spending, focusing on shipbuilding and missile defense systems, as well as funding going toward immigration and border enforcement.
Total defense spending is becoming quite remarkable. With a Pentagon budget request of $848 billion last week, we’re inching closer to a total military budget of nearly $1 trillion. You have to wonder—where will this all lead?
Interestingly, the passage followed a marathon speech from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who spoke for a whopping 8 hours and 44 minutes, intentionally delaying the vote to challenge the GOP’s plans. It exceeds a prior record set by Kevin McCarthy when he made a similar lengthy address in 2021.
Notably, two Republicans broke ranks, joining all Democrats against the bill, which had passed the Senate just days earlier.
